Re-Step for Professionals

What is the Re-Step™ system and how does it work?

Re-Step™ is an exclusive therapy system that improves the everyday gait stability of patients with walking disabilities. The Re-Step™ system consists of a pair of shoes and computer software. The computer program and level of difficulty can be adjusted according to the patient’s progress and capability. Four pistons, located in the sole of the Re-Step™ shoe, alter the angles of the sole during the walking training in a chaotic and unpredictable manner. The order of changes is determined by a non-linear mathematical formula.

The training is supervised by expert physical therapists who are certified in the Re-Step™ system, and are qualified to apply its ground-breaking approach to rehabilitation. Facilities using our system are able to offer patients a unique rehabilitation regiment that is focused on their walking, which combines and implements motor learning and challenges their balance and concentration systems. Re-Step™ shoes measure the parameters of the patient’s gait, while delivering progress data and treatment recommendations to a computer of any type or mobile device connected to the system.

The scientific approach underlying Re-Step™:

The purpose of walking is to take us from one place to another, while navigating in complex environments. Unlike a controlled environment where conditions are uniform and constant (like when exercising in a clinic or on a treadmill at a fixed speed), in everyday life we walk in unregulated, natural environments where conditions vary and one can always expect surprises we have to adjust to.

We contend that the motor control of walking is chaotic because people are continuously expected to adapt to complex and unregulated environments, whereas in a controlled setting nothing needs to be learned and the motor control of walking is unnecessary. Training with Re-Step™ involves moderate chaotic perturbations while walking. It simulates an actual natural environment and challenges the patient to solve problems in real time.

Who can benefit from Re-Step™?

Training with Re-Step™ is beneficial to people whose ability to walk has been compromised due to a stroke, brain trauma, or cerebral palsy. It also helps elderly fallers. The system, which is founded on the latest advances in neuroscience, has already demonstrated remarkable results among patients across the globe.
